Three Mijas, not one
Mijas Pueblo is the white village up the mountain, 428 metres above sea level. Narrow streets, a view over the whole coast, cooler in summer and colder in January. You need a car for everything, and the road up is winding.
Las Lagunas lies on the plain and has grown into Fuengirola. It is the Spanish everyday part: schools, a health centre, an industrial estate, ordinary flats at ordinary prices. Closest of all to the Swedish School.
The coast runs about 12 kilometres and holds El Chaparral, La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda. We have separate pages on the last three.
The municipality covers 148 square kilometres and had 95,104 residents on 1 January 2025, according to the statistics institute INE.
Who it suits
Mijas suits you if you want more square metres and more garden than Fuengirola offers, and accept the car as part of daily life. It suits you less if you want to walk everywhere or take the train to the airport.
Families with children at the Swedish School should work out the school run carefully: from Las Lagunas it is short, from Calahonda it is a drive every morning. Read our page on the school run first.
What to check here in particular
- Which part of Mijas the listing means. "Mijas" can be the village on the mountain or an urbanisation by the sea. They have little in common.
- The road, not the straight line. A map shows distance. It does not show the bends up to the Pueblo or the morning traffic on the A-7.
- Water and drainage in older urbanisations. Ask for the community's minutes and any special levies agreed.
- Registered floor area against what is built. Pools and conservatories added later are common, and not always registered.
- The letting rules in the statutes, if you intend to rent out. Read the guide on renting out before you buy, not after.
Getting around
No train. The C-1 commuter line ends at Fuengirola, and that is the station for the whole Mijas coast. From there trains run every twenty minutes to Málaga and the airport.
Bus M-122 runs Fuengirola to Mijas Pueblo. M-220 runs Fuengirola to Marbella along the coast, stopping at La Cala, Riviera and Calahonda; M-119 is a local loop between Calahonda, La Cala and Fuengirola.
Golf
Mijas has more golf than any other municipality on this stretch of coast. La Cala Resort, Mijas Golf with Los Lagos and Los Olivos, Calanova, Miraflores, Santana, La Noria and La Siesta. If you buy on a course, check what membership costs, whether it transfers with the property, and what the community pays to maintain the greenery around it.
The Nordic side
The 2022 register recorded 842 Swedes in Mijas. They live spread along the coast, most densely in Calahonda and Riviera del Sol. The Swedish School, the Swedish church and Club Nórdico are in Fuengirola, which borders Las Lagunas.
