Homes near the Swedish School

For a Scandinavian family on the Costa del Sol, the school run is what decides the choice of home. Everything else can be compromised on.

Why Fuengirola

The Swedish School Costa del Sol is in Fuengirola. It is the single most important reason Scandinavian families on the coast end up in this particular municipality — and why Scandinavian life here has its centre of gravity in Fuengirola rather than Marbella. Several international schools are within reach as well.

It also means the house hunt looks different for a family than for a retired couple. View and seafront matter less. The school run, safety along that route and proximity to after-school activities mean everything.

Five questions a family should ask before buying

  1. What does the school run look like on their own two feet? The older the children get, the more it is worth that they can get there themselves.
  2. Where are the after-school activities? Football, swimming, riding — it adds up to more journeys than you think.
  3. How many parking spaces do you need? Two cars is common in families outside Fuengirola centre, and a garage space is not a given.
  4. Are there children in the building or urbanisation? Many complexes are dominated by pensioners and stand half empty out of season.
  5. What applies to school places and empadronamiento? Ask the school and the town hall directly, and do it early.
